Although funding for a new Children’s hospital in Saskatchewan was announced in the March 18, 2009 provincial budget, work on this project has been underway for quite some time, much of it since 2007. The need for a maternal and children’s hospital in Saskatchewan dates back many years to when administrators, government, university, health care professionals and the Children's Hospital Foundation began formal discussions around the need for such a hospital and the best location.
All of these discussions led to one overall goal—to establish a provincial maternal and children's hospital in the province. While many of these discussions occurred prior to the formation of Saskatoon Health Region in 2002, it is the Region tasked with the responsibilities of planning, developing and operating the new facility. The Region is doing that in collaboration with many partners. It is working closely with the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan to make sure that the hospital has the resources and equipment required to deliver state-of-the-art maternal and pediatric health services. The Region is also working closely with the Government of Saskatchewan—Ministry of Health to make sure the entire project aligns with the Ministry’s priorities and goals.
Working on this project are a number of dedicated staff and volunteers from many different departments and agencies. These staff members continue to work very hard to make the children’s hospital a reality. To make sure the project is done right in an efficient and expeditious way, these staff members have been meeting with other health regions, universities, and industry to make sure the necessary components for a new, state-of-the art hospital are in place. Guiding these employees is the Project Steering Committee. This committee is comprised of key individuals from Saskatoon Health Region, the University of Saskatchewan, Ministry of Health and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. The committee has been meeting regularly since the province announced funding for the new hospital.
