Why is Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) planning to build a maternal and children’s hospital within a hospital? Don’t we already offer these services?
We currently offer services to mothers and children. The building of a maternal and children’s hospital within a hospital will allow us to consolidate our services and create space to meet the unique needs of mothers, newborns, children and families. The space will allow us to address needs around clinical as well as family centred care.
I thought it was going to be just a children’s hospital – why are we adding maternal?
We are planning a maternal and children’s hospital within a hospital because the co-location of maternal services with children’s services is essential for a seamless transition of clinical care. Maternal and newborn care is also part of the continuum of care for children’s services.
When will this open?
We anticipate to open the new hospital in either 2014 or 2015.
What serices will be offered?
Some patients requiring very specialized services will continue to be referred out of province.
We will continue to offer a wide range of maternal and children’s services such as inpatient pediatrics; pediatric and neonatal intensive care; pediatric emergency and surgical services; ambulatory and developmental pediatric services; perinatal assessment; labour assessment; labour and birthing services and post partum care. However, highly specialized programs (i.e. pediatric cardio vascular surgery) will not be included in the hospital plan because the volume of patients requiring this type of service in Saskatchewan is too small to warrant the need for such a service. In these cases, children will continue to be transferred out of province.
Are you getting input from patients and families? How are you doing that?
We have an active patient and family advisory council in Maternal And Children’s Health Services. This council has proven to be extremely valuable and highly involved in many operational decisions and will play a key role in designing the new hospital. Input from our children will also be instrumental in the project’s development.
Will staff have the opportunity to provide input?
Staff input into the development of the maternal and children’s hospital will be critical to the success of our project. Staff representatives are on the project steering committee and will also be on each of the user advisory committees.
