Background
Public reporting by health organizations on their performance and accountability regarding the quality and safety of patient care have become leading practices around the world. As a publicly funded health system, Saskatoon Health Region is frequently called upon to account for its actions, decisions and results.
Over the past several years, we have developed a set of performance indicators that measure and report to the senior management and the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority on the quality and safety of our care. These reports are intended to guide our quality improvement efforts and measure how we are doing relative to specific targets or standards.
Dashboard
Accountability and measuring our performance are integral components of our strategic plan - a plan that was created based on input from more than 1500 health care providers, patients, family members and community groups. In order to measure how we are doing in certain areas we have defined a number of Quality Indicators surrounding patient safety. These indicators have been compiled into one document, or dashboard, that summarizes our performance.
The information provided in the dashboard identifies areas where we are doing well and areas where we need to improve. The dashboard will evolve over time as SHR continues work on a formalized performance measurement framework, the purpose of which will be to align performance reporting at various levels of the organization. The goal is to streamline reporting, reduce duplication, and show how the information collected informs organizational decisions.
