Construction update - April 2012

The new 18 bed surgical unit currently under construction on the fourth floor at St. Paul's Hospital is taking shape as most areas are drywalled and some patient rooms are well advanced. The unit, which will create capacity in the Region for additional urology, plastics, and ears-nose-throat inpatient surgery, is on schedule to open in the summer of 2012.

New 18-bed surgical unit at St. Paul's Hospital

On September 26, 2011, the Honourable Don McMorris, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Health, joined Saskatoon Health Region and St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation to announce and launch construction of a new 18-bed surgical unit in St. Paul’s Hospital B-wing 4th Floor. This exciting renovation project will increase surgical capacity to help achieve the goals of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative.
Goals of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative include improved access to surgery and reduced wait times for patients, so no patient in our province will wait longer than three months for elective surgery by March 31, 2014. To achieve that goal, Saskatoon Health Region will continue to increase the number of surgical procedures performed as one of many surgical initiatives in the next few years. The new surgical unit at St. Paul’s will create capacity for additional inpatient surgery.
The new unit will be designed based upon current standards for infection control and safety and will include single-patient rooms with wheelchair accessible washrooms, patient lifts in each room and two negative pressure rooms. The unit will be designed using lean principles, meaning reduced steps and movement required by caregivers, and a streamlined planning and construction process resulting in a faster timeline than normal from initiation to completion. Planning sessions with frontline staff, managers, and support services were held in July and August to provide input on potential room and design concepts.
Preparation of the currently vacant 4th floor began on September 1 and constructionbegin on October 1. The completed unit is expected to open in summer 2012. This project is being funded by the Ministry of Health and donor funds raised through the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation Embracing the Future campaign. Read the news September 26 media release.
