Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
What is it?
Nicotine replacement therapy is used to help you quit tobacco.
Quitting tobacco may be difficult but it can be done. Many only achieve their goal by using nicotine replacement products.
Studies show nicotine replacement doubles smoking cessation rates. With tobacco cessation counselling, the quit rate doubles once again, so your chances of successfully quitting are very good. But you need to set that important QUIT DATE and have a QUIT PLAN in place. A tobacco counsellor can assist you with this.
Nicotine replacement contains nicotine and delivers "clean nicotine" to your body to help stop cravings and withdrawal symptoms. When you smoke, your body is absorbing not only nicotine, but thousands of toxic chemicals, several of which are cancer-causing.
What products are available?
Nicotine replacement is now available in several forms and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. There are patches, gum and a nicotine inhaler. The nicotine lozenges will soon be available in Canada.
The patch is applied daily to the skin on your body. The gum is chewed in a special way ... bite, bite, park and is used whenever you have a craving. The inhaler resembles a cigarette and nicotine vapour is inhaled whenever you have the urge to smoke.
Products are available in different doses and after several weeks of use, you will gradually wean yourself off the product.
The effectiveness of the different products are about the same. You need to decide which product is best for you. There are brochures of information available on each of the products and it is advisable to consult with your physician or pharmacist for advice. Some contraindications may apply.
Warning information:
Manufacturers of the products recommend that you not smoke or use other nicotine replacement products while taking another nicotine therapy.
