"Game Plan"
A Message from Maura Davies, President and CEO
My husband, two sons and I are keen basketball fans. So it was a special thrill for them to recently attend several games between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association finals. Across the world, over the next several weeks, fanatic soccer fans will be avidly following the World Cup soccer games in South Africa. Even for people who are less keen fans, it is hard to resist the excitement of seeing talented, world class athletes doing their best, pursuing a common goal by following a highly strategic game plan.
So what does this have to do with Saskatoon Health Region? I think we can learn a lot from these athletes. We too have highly skilled and dedicated team players, who are more likely to succeed if we follow a game plan that allows us to optimize all our talents to achieve common goals.
On June 9, 2010 the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority approved our new game plan, the strategic plan that guides our efforts for the period from 2010 to 2013. Full details of our plan are available on Saskatoon Health Region’s website (PDF).
This plan is aligned with the provincial plan (Strategic and Operational Direction for the Health System), which directs the plans and priorities for the Ministry of Health, all health regions and the Cancer Agency of Saskatchewan. This level of alignment is unprecedented in our province, and probably any province, and sets the stage for collaboration and success.
Our new plan will look familiar to many because it is a “refresh” of our 2007-2010 strategic plan, which has served us well. We needed to update our plan to reflect what we have achieved over the past three years and our current environment, including the Patient First Review. The new plan is very focused, with fewer priorities but high expectations for performance.
The plan is built around four strategic directions, each of which has four goals.
The Authority also approved more detailed objectives for 2010/11 by which we will start to achieve these goals. Our budget is aligned with this plan.
Now it is time to execute our game plan. This requires an awareness and commitment by every department, program, unit and individual to contribute to our success. Over the coming weeks and months, detailed plans will need to be developed by every department, program and unit to identify which goals and objectives are the most relevant and urgent priorities for 2010/11.
As we implement our plan, we will need to “keep score” to see how we are doing. We are finalizing the performance indicators which we will measure, monitor and widely report to track our progress in achieving these goals and objectives. My accountability agreement and the accountabilities of all management staff will be aligned with our strategic plan.
In addition to being team players, we will all need to be cheerleaders, to celebrate our successes, large and small, throughout the year.
It’s game time!
