Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan
Hospital Services Offered
What services will be in the new Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan?
Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan will serve children, teenagers, mothers, and pregnant women. It will be home to a number of provincial pediatric and maternal programs and Saskatoon Health Region’s pediatric and maternal services, along with a new pediatric and adult emergency department.
The project team spent a large portion of 2010 reviewing and finalizing the 2007 functional program. The functional program lists all of the required services in the new hospital. The key services that will be in the new hospital include:
- maternal services such as antepartum inpatient, labour assessment, fetal assessment, intrapartum inpatient (labour and delivery), post partum inpatient and maternal outpatient;
- pediatric services such as a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, pediatric inpatient, pediatric surgical suite and pediatric outpatient;
- adult and pediatric emergency services.
The original 2007 functional program and proposed bed numbers were revised during the 2010 review using new population projection numbers for Saskatchewan.
These revisions were approved through an amendment to the 2007 functional program. The amendment and the 2007 functional program have been approved by both the Ministry of Health and Saskatoon Regional Health Authority.
The following presentation (PDF) outlines the amendment and provides further information on the functional program. A complete copy of the 2007 Functional Program (PDF) is also available.
Will children have to travel out-of-province once the hospital opens?
Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan will not eliminate out-of-province travel for children with rare conditions or requiring highly specialized care.
They will continue to be best served in larger centres where the entire health care team sees a larger number of patients each year to achieve and maintain specialized skills and expertise. In some instances, Saskatchewan does not have the population to allow for that to happen. For example, Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton will continue to be Western Canada's referral centre for pediatric cardiac surgery.
What Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan will do is make our current services and programs stronger through modern, purpose built space and will create the best experience for the entire family.
