November 28, 2011 - Design Moves Forward
Have you experienced the power of the stopwatch? One pediatric nurse has and she shared her thoughts with us. She helped out with data collection which will feed into work underway with planning for Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. Working with John Black and Associates, Saskatoon Health Region has been diving deep into data to guide decisions about the new hospital. All of this will feed into two week-long sessions in November and December called 3P (production, preparation, process). Read more in the November issue of Region Reporter.
November 22, 2011 - Saskatoon Health Region Begins Parkade Construction
Before we can build Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan, a lot of work is needed to get the location ready for construction, including modifying the parkade at Royal University Hospital. This work is called "Early Works" and is key in the preparing the site for the eventual construction of the new maternal and children's hospital. This week, Saskatoon Health Region started the first of 4 phases. The project will conclude in 2013 with the site ready to go as construction of Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan begins. Read more in the news release issued today by the Early Works project team at Saskatoon Health Region.

November 16, 2011 - Planning for the Next Step
The next step is 3P (production preparation process) events. 3P is a lean tool often used in facility design and is based on creating new processes for an area and using those new processes to develop a design. The goal is to reduce waits and improve the experience for patients, families and care providers. Saskatoon Health Region has spent the past several weeks preparing for two intense week long events involving physicians, staff, leaders and families. To learn more, read our latest design update.

Muda. Get to know where it is. Ask, “how do we get rid of it?” Then, make it happen. Elimination of muda – Japanese for waste – is the challenge being presented to physician and operational leaders during planning for the next phase of work with Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. This work began the week of September 12. Read more in the latest issue of Region Reporter.
September 7, 2011 - Digging Deeper into Design
Over the past eleven months, we have worked through a design process that is proving extremely valuable. Through design sessions and process improvement work, our patients, families, staff and physicians have uncovered evidence and ideas that will make this hospital truly a state of the art facility.
Now, the team will focus on reducing project construction costs to fit within the available funding while retaining the services planned for this building. This will involve building on the exceptional work already completed. We will challenge everyone involved including patients, families, staff and physicians to find new and innovative ways to deliver care. We will use expert advice to challenge our current design by digging deeper into evidence and alternatives. To learn more about where the project is at and our next steps, read our latest design update.

May 17, 2011 - "It really inspires and invigorates us!"
Cozy. Inviting. Enjoyable. Words many wouldn't expect to describe a child's stay in hospital. But some Grade 8 students think those are just the words that should. Marla Fruson's Grade 8 class at Brownell School in Saskatoon came up with some amazing ideas for the learning and social spaces on our new pediatric inpatient floor. Our architects and project team were inspired by their passion and creativity. Read more by clicking on Region Reporter.

February 23, 2011 - Schematic Design Underway
From February 1 to February 3, the project team met with staff and physicians from the departments who will be working within the new hospital.
During these days, current plans for each floor were reviewed with staff, physicians, patients and families. The architects gathered their feedback on what will work and what still needs need further development. This was the fourth session held with user groups. Patients and families who participated are part of Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan Patient and Family Working Group.
Since the schematic design phase began in September 2010, about 15 groups and more than 200 staff, physicians, patients and families have worked through these initial drawings. These groups include pediatrics, maternal, surgery and emergency services. They also include representatives from support services such as pharmacy, medical imaging, facilities and physiotherapy.
Participants were chosen or assigned by the various departments, and in some cases, an invitation was extended to an entire area for participation.
