Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan
Parking and Traffic
In the spring of 2010, a panel including members from the public, staff, physicians, industry, Ministry of Health, and Saskatoon Regional Health Authority took another look at where the best location was to build the new hospital.
That group recommended that parking be a priority for the new hospital, regardless of location. With Royal University Hospital chosen as the recommended site of Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan, work began immediately on parking and traffic.
Today, work is underway to modify the parkade at Royal University Hospital. You can read more in a news release issued by Saskatoon Health Region in November 2011. Or, watch the news conference here.
A project called "Early Works" has been set up to determine how to minimize this impact on parking for both patients and families, along with staff and physicians, and ensure the site is ready for construction of Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan.
"Early Works" is made up of 4 phases and will be completed in 2013 to coincide with the targeted start of construction for CHS. You can read more about these phases and see the site plans in this brief "Early Works" update.
Overall, "Early Works" will focus first on modifying the existing parkade and next changing entrances into the parkade. Then, the work will centre on preparing the site for the construction of the new hospital.
To support this work, a number of day-time staff parkers have been accommodated at a lot on the University of Saskatchewan campus. However, given the projected increase in demand for parking upon completion of Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan, the need for off-site parking will continue.
The intent with changes to the parkade is to increase the number of patient and family/visitor stalls.
Work is underway to develop a longer-term parking strategy for parking for both patients and families as well as staff and physicians at all of the Health Region's Saskatoon hospitals.
