The joint Saskatoon Health Region and Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) Retention and Recruitment Committee has been meeting since April 2009. The committee works to address RN/RPN retention and recruitment.

Four key initiatives have been identified to assist Saskatoon Health Region in building a culture of nursing excellence:
- Rural Nursing
- Long-Term Care Nursing (Urban)
- Healthy & Respectful Workplace
- Education, Training and Professional Development
1. Rural Nursing
Objectives of this initiative are:
- To retain current RN’s/RPN’s
- To fill rural nursing vacancies
- To increase the levels of staff engagement and satisfaction within the workplace
- To allow staff to utilize entitled vacation

2. Long-Term Care (LTC) Nursing (Urban)
Objectives of this initiative are:
- To retain current Long Term Care (LTC) RN’s/RPN’s
- To recruit and fill LTC urban vacancies
- To increase the level of staff engagement and satisfaction within the workplace
- To allow staff to take entitled vacation

3. Healthy & Respectful Workplace
Objectives of this initiative are:
- To foster a culture of healthy relationships
- To increase the level of staff engagement and satisfaction within the workplace
- To provide RN’s/RPN’s with tips/strategies for managing shift work
- To build positive and supportive team culture in order to impact recruitment and retention
- To provide RN’s/RPN’s professional development opportunities that will enhance their personal and professional lives.
