(SASKATOON) June 25, 2001 -- Happy anniversary,
Home Care! Monday, June 25 marks the 20th Anniversary of Home Care.
Since its inception in 1981, Home Care nurses, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, social workers, nutritionists, home health
aides, and home care volunteers have been making a difference in
the lives of thousands of people in our community.
Today, more than 4,400 residents in Saskatoon and District are
able to remain in their homes with the support of Home Care services.
Twenty years ago there were about 800 clients.
The aim of Home Care is to help people live independently in their
homes and support those who have been discharged from the hospital.
Home Care brings health care into the community and complements
the care provided by family, friends, neighbours and others in the
community.
One of the original employees looks back: "It was pretty basic
care when we started. Over the years, we have done more and more
specialized care in the home for our clients. There is a broad range
of personal care and home services Home Care workers provide. Overall,
more is being done for our clients in the home. We assist them to
remain at home and keep their independence as much as possible."
Home is best. Health research has shown that people regain their
health faster and enjoy a higher quality of life when they are in
the comfort of their own home. A 1998 study found that Home Care
patients were more satisfied because they felt they had more involvement
in decision making. Another study found that hip-replacement patients
receiving home care reported better improvement in quality of life
than those with hospital care (1998).
