(SASKATOON) August 14, 2001 -- Twenty-three community
groups are receiving more than $133,000 from Saskatoon District
Health to improve the health of the community. The funding is part
of the SDH Community Grant program to support groups within the
District for new projects that help build healthy communities.
The Community Grants will fund community projects such as wellness
clinics, health enhancing activities for immigrant women, retraining
for people with an Acquired Brain Injury, exercise and recreational
programs, a resource centre for grieving people, traffic safety
education, drug abuse resistance training, problem gambling awareness,
school dental programs, and needle safety.
"We are very pleased with the high calibre of community projects
that have come forward and are delighted to be able to provide some
financial assistance," says Bob Bundon, Chair, Saskatoon District
Health. "The Community Grant Program is an excellent manner
for the District to work in partnership with the Saskatoon community."
A total of 33 project applications were made. "Based on the
varied and high calibre projects that were submitted, it was a very
difficult task for the Board to select the recipients as all are
worthy projects," says Suzanne Mahaffey, Chair, Community Grants
Committee. "This is just a sampling of the many excellent health-related
projects that can help to improve the health and well-being of the
residents living in both rural and urban areas within Saskatoon
District Health."
There are three grant categories - Community Wellness Grants up
to $1000, Health Promotion Grants up to $5000, and Community Service
Grants up to $40,000.
The next deadline for application is September 14th, 2001. For
