(SASKATOON) November 9, 2001 -- The 2001 Fall
. . .in motion Stay Active campaign officially ended today
and the results show that many more Saskatoon and District residents
are getting physically active!
This year's Fall. . .in motion campaign
was launched with a great event at the Bessborough Park on October
1st where over 6,100 people participated in the Village People's
YMCA Dance. Although the launch did not set a Guinness World Record,
the event set world record standards for fun, energy and enthusiasm!
The final tally for the 2001 Fall…in motion Stay
Active campaign shows that 1,571 Saskatoon and District residents
turned in their physical activity logs to be eligible for the grand
prize draw. The winner, Shauna Korol, receives a flight for two
on Canadian Regional Airlines and two nights' accommodation at one
of the High Country Vacation Properties resorts.
According to Shauna Korol, "Being in motion is very important
to me because becoming fit and changing my lifestyle has given me
a whole new outlook on life. I feel better every day and I'm very
glad to set this good example for my children."
Over the month of October 2001, the Fall . . . in motion Stay Active campaign focused on a number of special themes around
keeping physically active:
- "Children and Youth Week" - - Schools participated
in the International Walk to School Day on October 2nd;
- "Fitness and Leisure Facilities Week" - - A number
of fitness facilities and leisure centres opened their doors free
of charge for residents who wanted to check out their facilities;
- "Do It at Work Week" - - A challenge was issued to
workplaces to try and be more physically active during this week.
Some workplaces chose to issue challenges to other workplaces
to see who would be the most active during the month of October;
- The general public overwhelmingly responded to the campaign
through contests offered by the media and by tracking their physical
activity on the in motion activity logs.
Organizers are proud of the residents of Saskatoon and District
who met the Stay Active challenge and were physically active during
the month of October 2001.
The goal of the Fall. . . in motion Stay Active campaign
was to encourage Saskatoon and District residents to incorporate
regular physical activity in their daily lives. The vision of the
in motion initiative is to make Saskatoon and District the healthiest
community in Canada through physical activity.
"Even though the fall campaign has ended, it's important to
stay motivated," says Tom Archibald, Vice President, SDH. "Choose
an activity that you enjoy, do it with a friend and make it part
of your daily routine."
In motion is being sponsored by Saskatoon District Health
(SDH) in partnership with the City of Saskatoon, University of Saskatchewan
and ParticipACTION.
