November 1, 2005, Saskatoon – Saskatoon Health Region Clinical Health Psychology has launched a new support service to help prevent mental illness and promote mental health and well-being – Road To Well-Being offers both a self-directed web site and/or a series of group sessions to help us map our way to better mental health.
The program focuses on the psychological factors that research has shown to improve physical and mental health. The goals are to provide participants with the information and strategies they need to reduce stress, promote healthy relationships, and increase overall well-being.
"We get messages about improving our physical and nutritional health through our families, schools, communities, and the media – we all know about in-motion. We don’t get the messages we need to improve our mental health. We like to call this ‘in-E-motion’." says Saskatoon Health Region Professional Leader of Psychology, Fern Stockdale Winder.
The self-guided web-journey takes you from the Isle of Pessimism to the Forest of Conflict and beyond, with a multitude of additional explorations and choices. The web site can be found at www.roadtowellbeing.ca. It is recommended that you begin the journey by clicking the Road To Well Being icon at the top centre of the map. You can also access the site by going directly to a section of your choice from the map.
Group sessions offer participants an in-person, guided psycho-educational experience. Sessions include lecture, dialogue, role playing, group work, relaxation, meditation, workbook lessons, powerpoint material and references to the web site. The sessions are offered in two formats – featuring two-hour (five-day) or four-hour (three-day) session series’. The next three-day series group sessions begin January 21 and continue February 4 and February 25. Phone (306) 655-2341 to participate. Space is limited.
Pilot group sessions have already been completed, and participants have been enthusiastic about the information they learned and the changes they have made in their lives as a result.
Funding for the development of the site and session material came from the provincial Health Quality Council, with ongoing staff and support provided by Saskatoon Health Region.
