(SASKATOON) April 5, 2005– St. Paul’s Hospital celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Palliative Care Unit today at St. Paul’s Hospital. Included in the festivities was the unveiling of the donor wall in its new location outside the unit.
"Palliative Care is an important part of the continuum of care, and St. Paul’s is proud to have Saskatoon’s palliative care unit situated here," said Brenda FitzGerald, President and CEO of St. Paul’s Hospital. "Providing care and comfort to those who need it, as well as providing care and assistance to the families of Palliative Care patients, means greater comfort and peace of mind for the many people in Saskatchewan this unit serves."
Palliative care is aimed at the relief of suffering and improving the quality of life for persons who are living with or dying from advanced illness. Palliative care services are helpful not only when a person is approaching death but also at earlier stages in the illness. Palliative care may be combined with treatments aimed at reducing or curing the illness, such as chemotherapy. Families also benefit from support when their loved one is dying and after his or her death.
