(SASKATOON) April 6, 2005 – St. Paul’s Hospital, (SPH), held a ribbon cutting ceremony today to officially open a unique play area for children. Nutana Collegiate Institute students, supported by St. Paul’s Hospital Facilities Services and Volunteer Services have created a children’s play area in the Emergency Waiting Room at St. Paul’s Hospital.
"This is a unique situation when you consider pediatric cases are handled at Royal University Hospital," says Lorna Callbeck, Manager, Volunteer Services at SPH. "Although St. Paul’s is not a pediatric hospital, children often come along when a parent or caregiver is seeking medical attention at Emergency," adds Callbeck.
Nutana Collegiate students painted the walls in a portion of the Emergency Waiting Room in a bright and cheery mural depicting children at play. A small play house has been added, along with a rack of books. The final touches included a toy box, play mat, and rocking chair.
"This is more than a beautiful play area for children. It is an illustration of the beauty that lies within our neighbourhood," says Brenda FitzGerald, CEO of St. Paul’s Hospital. "Our young friends at Nutana Collegiate have created a vibrant play area for children within an area often associated with stress. Their hard work and dedication speaks to the kindness and the selflessness of these students - our neighbours and friends."
"Our students feel very proud and special," says Nutana Art Teacher Theresa Mudrik. "This project is very visible, and they feel they have been successful in creating something quite special."
