SASKATOON, June 15, 2005 –Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) is honouring almost 1,000 employees and physicians from across the health region who have collectively provided over 18, 000 years of care and service to the health region.
Celebrated honourees work in all aspects of health care provision, in rural and urban centres throughout the region including long-term care facilities, numerous community based services and in the10 hospitals within Saskatoon Health Region,
Being honoured for 50 years of service is Dr. Louis Horlick, Royal University Hospital. Dr. Horlick joined the staff of the College of Medicine of the University of Saskatchewan in 1954. Dr. Horlick is proud of the accomplishments of the cardiology unit at RUH, particularly the first complete right heart catheterization study in Saskatchewan undertaken in 1955. Dr. Horlick received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1991 and the Order of Canada in 1995. He continues to work in cardiology and in geriatric medicine.
Being honoured for 40 years of service are Dr. James Dosman, Internal Medicine; Gordon Jackson, Environmental Linen Services; Paul Shumay, Anatomic Pathology; and Dr. James Wood, Family Medicine.
This year’s honourees, from communities throughout the health region, also include:
• 18 employees with 35 years of service
• 58 employees with 30 years of service
• 180 employees with 25 years of service
• 203 employees with 20 years of service
• 336 employees with 15 years of service
• 197 employees with 10 years of service
"This year, throughout Saskatoon Health Region there are 998 recipients celebrating milestone anniversaries of ten or more years of service to health care. This represents over 18,000 years of commitment by this year’s recipients to our organization, and to service and health care. That is a tremendous contribution of knowledge, experience and dedication," says Darlene Eberle, Chairperson, Saskatoon Regional Health Authority.
At the final awards ceremony held last night, the 7th Annual Muriel Jarvis Award was presented to Lori Chartier, Manager, Nursing Development, Saskatoon Health Region. The Muriel Jarvis Award was established in 1998 by the Authority to celebrate a Saskatoon Health Region or Affiliated Agency staff member who exemplifies "Making a Positive Difference in the Lives of Others."
Saskatoon Health Region is the largest single employer in the province with over 11,000 staff members and over 750 physicians. Saskatoon Health Region serves close to 300,000 residents in more than 100 towns, cities and rural municipalities in our health region.
