(SASKATOON) May 18, 2005 – A public meeting of the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority will take place today, Wednesday, May 18, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Wynyard Integrated Facility.
Items that will be reviewed and discussed by the Authority include the following:
2004 Health Status Report – Dr. Johnmark Opondo, Deputy Medical Health Officer for the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) will report further on 2004 Health Status Report that was released in September, focusing his presentation on how air, soil, water, and housing quality affects health status.
Performance Monitoring – The Regional Health Authority will review for approval the draft audited financial statements for 2004-05, indicated an operating surplus of $2.1 million on a budget of $580 million.
Physician Human Resources – The Regional Health Authority will be informed that during the past fiscal year, the Health Region recruited 36 new members to its medical staff. There were also 21 members who voluntarily resigned, retired or died. Overall, there was a net gain of 15 physicians. The new members encompass a variety of specialties including: anaesthesia, critical care, emergency medicine, family medicine, pathology, general internal medicine, gastroenterology, cardiology, haematology, medical imaging, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurosurgery and thoracic surgery. There are more than 750 physicians working throughout the Health Region, which is approximately 40% of all physicians working in the province.
RUH Acute Care Admissions Area – The Regional Health Authority will be asked to approve funding totalling $547,821 to complete construction work and supply equipment relating to the Acute Admissions Area Renovations and Therapies area located on the Ground Floor at Royal University Hospital.
Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) – An update will be provided on a pilot project coordinated through Acquired Brain Injury program staff, with assistance from Emergency and Rehabilitation departments, MD Ambulance, local police and the school system designed to inform teenagers to the consequences of risk taking behaviours.
