(SASKATOON) August 26, 2005 — Saskatoon Health Region Public Health reports today that there are two probable human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the Saskatoon Health Region. Both individuals have sought medical attention and one individual has been hospitalized.
“We are aware of 21 probable and 3 confirmed cases of WNV in the province. Two of the probable cases are from the Saskatoon Health Region and are being investigated further,” says Dr. David Torr, Deputy Medical Health Officer for Saskatoon Health Region. Dr. Torr adds, “We are moving into a warm weekend and there are large numbers of WNV carrying mosquitoes out there. Protect yourselves properly with appropriate clothing and DEET for the appropriate time you are outdoors! This is our best protective artillery!”
Residents are reminded to diligently take appropriate steps to avoid and reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, namely:
• Use appropriate DEET mosquito repellents, for appropriate periods of time with repeat spray after a few hours as indicated on the product labels. Check with your pharmacist for details.
• Wear long pants and long sleeved shirts.
• Use mosquito nets for infants over their play pens and carriages.
• Keep mosquitoes from entering your homes by using screened windows and doors. Keep these in good repair.
• Keep grass cut short.
• Eliminate all standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs (e.g. tires, flower pots, paddling pools, bird baths, etc.).
• Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when the mosquitoes are most likely to bite.
Information on insect repellents and mosquito precautions can be picked up at City Hall or any public health office.
