(May 3, 2006), SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Health Region, through its Community Grants Program, proudly announces $80,389 in funding for nine inspiring projects aimed at improving individual and community health.
"The grants committee is pleased to provide this funding to such worthy projects," said Suzanne Mahaffey, Chair, Community Grants Committee. "With all of these projects, the applicants can be very proud of their leadership and commitment. Their community work is helping to create a better quality of life for all of us within the Saskatoon Health Region."
The Community Grants Program funding is divided into three categories: Community Wellness (max. $5,000), Health Promotion (max $10,000) and Community Health (max $15,000).
For this round of grants, all the projects are located within Saskatoon, with the exception of the "Aurora Project," which will benefit Humboldt and surrounding area. The December round of grants included a number of rural projects. The projects funded aim to improve health in a variety of areas, and include:
- Injection Drug Users Youth Directory Art Production Team, submitted by Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming, Inc. (Community Wellness/$5,000);
- Family to Family Ties Grows with Nutrition and Reading, submitted by Catholic Family Services of Saskatoon (Community Wellness/$1,950);
- Partners for Rural Family Support “Aurora Project,” submitted by Partners for Rural Family Support (Community Wellness/$5,000);
- in motion National Physical Activity Summer Institute, submitted by the College of Kinesiology – University of Saskatchewan (Health Promotion/$10,000);
- Salad Bar Program in Saskatoon Health Region Elementary Schools, submitted by CHEP Good Food Inc. (Health Promotion/$8,100);
- Poverty Awareness: Starting from the Inside Out, submitted by the Working Group on Poverty Awareness (Health Promotion/$10,000);
- Junior Urban Canvas Project, submitted by Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming, Inc. (Community Health Promotion/$10,339);
- Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health (SWITCH), submitted by SWITCH (Community Health Promotion/$15,000);
- A Shared Vision for Healthy Communities & Healthy People, submitted by Saskatoon Community Clinic (Community Health/ $15,000).
