May 29, 2006, Saskatoon – In motion's summer campaign kicks off with the in motion Hike and Bike Challenge the week of June 4th-10th. This challenge is in partnership with the Saskatchewan Environmental Society and encourages residents of Saskatoon and region to choose active modes of transportation, or human-powered transportation such as cycling or walking, instead of driving, to increase their physical activity levels. Get in motion everyday by using your own steam to bike to work, in-line skate to the library, or walk to the store. Active transportation is good for the environment, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and it's good for your health! Prizes are available to those who participate! Visit the in motion web site for more information on the challenge and to access your activity log.
The in motion summer campaign then continues with Get Out – Get Active! During the period of June 11th-23rd, the Saskatoon Health Region campaign organizers are encouraging residents of the region to 'Get Out – Get Active', and make physical activity a regular part of their day.
"The focus of the campaign is on incorporating walking, cycling or wheeling into your daily routine," says Linda Martin, from in motion. "The weather is great for outdoor activities and we know that people have been itching to get back outdoors again. We're encouraging everyone to get outside and take a walk, go for a bike ride and in fact, make it part of your everyday routine."
Walking is a simple physical activity that everyone can do. 'Get Out – Get Active' will introduce the concept of getting active again by taking a walk. Aside from the obvious health benefits of walking, Saskatoon and area has great outdoor areas to explore. And an added bonus - walking is free!
To get the most out of your walk, do 30 to 60 minutes at a light pace everyday. To realize even more health benefits, increase your pace to a vigorous level. Also remember that if you're pressed for time, take 'activity snacks', or walk 3 or 4 times throughout the day to achieve your daily exercise goals!
