(August 17, 2006), Toronto – Important research regarding an HIV investigation among injection drug users in Saskatoon is being presented at the international AIDS conference being held in Toronto this week.
Dr. Johnmark Opondo, Deputy Medical Health Officer for the Saskatoon Health Region and Pam deBruin, Healthy Lifestyles Supervisor in the health region’s Public Health Services, are presenting the research today, Thursday, August 17.
"This is an opportunity to share with other researchers best practices in the management of HIV/AIDS not only around the world, but also at home in Saskatoon," says Dr. Opondo. "The conference’s theme is Time to Deliver. Research done in Saskatoon Health Region helps us understand better the patterns of distribution of new HIV cases in Saskatoon that will help us be more proactive in addressing this serious problem, rather than reactive. It can help us deliver better health care services, better tailored prevention and treatment strategies, and health education in the form it is most needed, to the right people at the best time.
"Reducing the rate of new HIV infections is a high priority for us all. We need to rapidly move towards the widespread implementation of proven strategies that have been shown to rapidly control this pandemic in other countries," he adds.
The research being presented can be found on the Saskatoon Health Region website at http://www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca/news_you_need/media_centre/news_releases.htm.
