(SASKATOON) Friday, March 10, 2006 – Saskatchewan women now have improved access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment, as the Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre of Care, Saskatoon Health Region's new breast health centre, officially opened its doors today.
"This facility will provide Saskatchewan women with easier access to coordinated breast health care, close to home," Health Minister Len Taylor said. "We are working hard on this priority area, and I applaud Saskatoon Health Region and the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation for their commitment to high quality women’s health services."
According to Sandra Blevins, Vice-President of Clinical and Operations Support for Saskatoon Health Region, the centre will offer an integrated approach to breast health care. "Bringing various aspects of breast health care together will offer women world-class care by improving diagnosis and surgery planning,” she said. "The centre will also attract medical specialists from around the world by creating an environment for research and new partnerships."
The Centre of Care has been made possible by the generosity of many individuals, businesses and communities. The largest single donation came from Irene and Leslie Dubé, whose gift of $1 million inspired the naming of the centre. Steve Shannon, Chair of Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation, said the Foundation is committed to raising $4.4 million to cover the capital costs of the Centre. "The community, the Foundation’s Volunteer Board of Directors, and hospital employees have all strongly supported this project from the beginning, recognizing the important role it will play in our province," Shannon said.
The Centre will begin accepting referrals in mid-April, and will serve women by enhancing existing diagnostic and assessment services in the province. As the Centre grows, a comprehensive breast health program will be developed, encompassing physical, emotional and educational support services.
