(Tuesday, December 19, 2006) Saskatoon – Tubal ligations will be permitted at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt, under a new policy effective immediately.
Representatives of the Saskatchewan Catholic Health Corporation, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s Board of Governors, the Bishops of Saskatchewan, the Humboldt physician group, and Saskatoon Health Region have worked together to develop a policy that balances the interests of patients and the provision of care with St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s accountability to the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings.
"Saskatoon Health Region is pleased with the decision to allow the delivery of tubal ligations at St. Elizabeth's," says Dr. Femi Olatunbosun, unified department head for Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences and acting chief of staff for Saskatoon Health Region. "This has been a challenging issue for all parties involved, and I’m glad the best interest of the patient has guided this decision-making process."
The new policy states that "Sterilization may be permitted when the primary purpose is to benefit the total health of the person" and reiterates that St. Elizabeth's policies and practices are guided by the Catholic Health Association of Canada Health Ethics Guide. Audits of completed tubal ligations will not be conducted. Click here to read the complete preamble, policy, and procedure.
