November 15, 2006 – Norovirus, commonly known as Norwalk virus, is a gastrointestinal illness easily spread amongst people through direct contact, such as shaking contaminated hands, or indirect contact, such as touching contaminated surfaces or eating contaminated foods. To help prevent the spread of Norovirus, Saskatoon Health Region residents are encouraged to diligently wash their hands and practice good hygiene habits.
The virus is generally always present in the community to some degree. Recently, a number of Norovirus symptom-like cases in individuals and groups have been reported in Saskatoon and area. Some of these cases have tested positive for Norovirus.
Norovirus easily contaminates surfaces and can last on these surfaces for weeks. The public can help prevent the spread of the virus.
- Always wash hands:
- after using the toilet
- after diapering a child
- before and after preparing or handling food
- before and after eating
- Use alcohol-based hand gel frequently, particularly if handwashing is not immediately possible.
- Cook foods thoroughly.
- Clean all surfaces thoroughly, especially taps, railings, door handles, and counters, at home and where groups of people congregate.
- If ill, stay at home for at least 48 hours after the last symptoms, to prevent spread to others.
Symptoms of Norovirus may include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and low-grade fever. Symptoms usually develop 24 to 48 hours after contracting the virus and generally last 48 hours. Most people recover on their own without treatment; however, it is important to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. If symptoms persist or are extremely severe, a family physician should be consulted.
People who contract gastrointestinal illness should stay home from work, school, or daycare while symptoms are present and for 48 hours after symptoms have cleared.
