May 17, 2006, HUMBOLDT – Saskatoon Health Region announced today that approvals have been received from Saskatchewan Health for the Functional Space Program and the Concept Plan for the Humboldt Health Services Redevelopment Project.
"The Saskatoon Regional Health Authority has been working in close partnership with Saskatchewan Health on this project," says Darlene Eberle, SHRA Chairperson. "We are very happy to see the rate of progress to date, and appreciate the support and commitment of Saskatchewan Health to this project."
The Functional Space Program identifies the space provided for the various functions that will be carried out in the facility. The Concept Plan shows the best way to use the space by grouping the various service areas in a manner that provides for the most efficiency of service and the best flow of traffic.
Approval of these two phases paves the way to move forward to the Schematic Design Phase. In this phase, each block of space in the concept plan is further refined into a design that will work efficiently for each service or department. Consideration is given to how staff and physicians will use the space, and how to make the space work well for them. Staff and physicians have started participating in working group sessions with the architectural consultants to help determine the best working designs for each of their areas.
Darlene Eberle, Dennis Korte, Mayor of Humboldt, and Kelvin Fisher, Executive Sponsor of the project, have visited municipalities throughout the Humboldt area with a presentation about the new facility. "We are very please to announce that $4.5 million of the remaining $5.2 million required for the local share of this project has now been raised," says Eberle.
"The urban and rural municipalities in, and surrounding, the community of Humboldt should be commended for their leadership in raising funds for this facility," says Minister of Health, Len Taylor. "This level of commitment is very important, and speaks very highly of the support for this project in the community and surrounding area."
As the project moves into the Schematic Design Phase, staff and physician involvement will be important. The schematic plan is expected to be completed by the end of June at which time it will be forwarded to Saskatchewan Health for approval.
The next stages of the development will include the preparation of blueprints, tenders for construction, and construction. The anticipated completion date for construction is December 2007, with occupancy of the facility taking place early in 2008.
"The St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Board is thrilled with the significant progress made in the past few months," says Jerome Strausser, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Board Chair. "Along with Saskatoon Health Region we share a joint vision of an integrated health care facility that will not only enhance the coordination of patient/client care, but will move us into the future of health care."
