(May 5, 2008), Saskatoon – Saskatoon Health Region has hired the first of four midwives and is preparing for midwifery service delivery later in 2008.
The introduction of midwifery services to Saskatoon Health Region follows proclamation of The Midwifery Act by Health Minister Don McMorris in the provincial legislative assembly on March 10, 2008.
“We’re striving to meet the needs of our diverse and growing communities to ensure mothers, families and babies have the healthiest start possible,” said Sheila Achilles, Director of Primary Health, Saskatoon Health Region.
A midwife is a health-care professional who has specialized education in midwifery and is registered and licensed with the Saskatchewan College of Midwives. The Saskatchewan College of Midwives has the ability to set bylaws and accept and approve licensing applications.
Midwives work with a pregnant woman and her family to provide care and support during pregnancy, labour, birth and the six weeks after the baby is born. They collaborate with doctors, nurses and others to provide the best care possible for the woman, her baby and her family.
“Throughout the process, the midwife, mother and family will discuss focused care and birthing decisions, including the choice to deliver in a hospital or home environment,” said Achilles.
Saskatoon Health Region will celebrate International Day of the Midwife on May 5 with an information session and special screening of The Business of Being Born, a documentary produced by television personality Ricki Lake.
