(May 6, 2008) Saskatoon – A new food service program offering four to 18 year-old Pediatric patients greater choice and improved satisfaction will arrive May 14. The Kidz Choice meal delivery cart will bring a daily array of hot meals directly to the patient unit for timely selection at the bedside.
“We’re thrilled to bring these very special patients improved comfort and support while they receive treatment in-hospital. Along with the fresh-daily delivery system, we’ve revised our menu with staff, patient and family input to bring the best possible choices to our patients,” explains Director of Food and Nutrition Services for the Region, Noella Leydon. “This is part of our larger plan for centralized meal assembly service in Saskatoon hospitals. The nutritious meals are prepared at Saskatoon City Hospital, are chilled, transported, then served hot and delicious to pediatric patients at the Royal University Hospital.”
Food & Nutrition Services staff will visit each patient just prior to service to offer them the available selections. Patients will then be served directly from the meal cart. Previously, meal choice was required a day in advance and the meals arrived pre-plated.
The new meal delivery system is the result of an extensive LEAN quality improvement process driven by Food & Nutrition Services staff that involved unit staff and patients. The service will be provided to additional special needs patients, including Rehabilitation, Mental Health, Palliative Care and Geriatric Assessment units over the coming months.
