(October 9, 2008) Saskatoon – Mothers from across the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) join women from Canada, the United States and Australia, Saturday, October 11, 2008, for Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge 2008. This challenge will attempt to set a record for the most children breastfeeding simultaneously in a set geographic area.
“The focus of this event is breastfeeding, but we also want to educate the public on the benefits of breastfeeding and help us move toward achieving our goal of having the Saskatoon Health Region designated as ‘Baby Friendly,’” said Nancy Klebaum, Manager of Nursing Post Partum Unit, Healthy and Home and the Breastfeeding Centre.
The Quintessence World Breastfeeding Challenge is the 6th annual challenge to be held in Saskatoon. It is organized locally by Breast Feeding Matters and takes place at The Refinery located at 609 Dufferin Avenue. Registration begins at Saturday October 11, 2008 at 10 a.m. with the challenge getting underway at 11:00 a.m.
When the challenge was launched in 2001 it consisted of 26 sites and 856 participants. Since then it has continued to grow. Last year there were 230 sites with 5.383 babies involved throughout Canada and the U.S. Saskatoon had over 30 mothers and babies participate in 2007.
