(November 25, 2009) Saskatoon – Saskatoon Health Region is encouraging residents to get immunized against H1N1 as general public vaccinations begin today.
“H1N1 virus is very unpredictable,” says Dr. Johnmark Opondo, deputy medical health officer, Saskatoon Health Region. “While you may think the worst is over for the 2nd wave pandemic, the virus is still present in our community. And, as the weather grows colder and we gather for Grey Cup and Christmas parties, those who have yet to be immunized will be at increased risk for exposure to the virus and even possible infection and so we could see another spike in this virus.”
Currently, more than 64,000 people in Saskatoon Health Region have been immunized. These individuals are those who were most at-risk for complications of influenza. However, this is only 21.5% of the Region’s population.
The Region encourages those who have not received H1N1 immunization to get vaccinated and help protect themselves, their families and friends. Symptoms of H1N1 take 1-5 days to appear after you contract the disease. During that time, you are contagious could spread the virus to those who have not been protected through immunization.
The H1N1 immunization site Prairieland Park will remain open to everyone wanting immunization until at least mid-December. Hours of operation are 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm weekdays; 10:00 am – 6:00 pm weekends.
As well, centralized roving H1N1 immunization clinics will operate throughout the rural areas. In- school immunizations for Grades 7 – 12 continue. For the latest clinic times and locations, visit the Region’s website at www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca.
Besides immunization, Saskatoon Health Region reminds everyone to take the following steps to stop the spread of influenza:
- Wash your hands often.
- Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or shoulder.
- Stay at home or indoors if you are sick. Drink plenty of fluids and rest.
- Clean surfaces often.
Since the beginning of October, 76 people have been hospitalized with H1N1. Currently, 10 people with H1N1 are in intensive care. Individuals can look at H1N1 statistics in our community on the Region’s website at www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca. The information will be updated every Tuesday.
