(October 17, 2012) Saskatoon – Saskatoon Health Region and Saskatoon Tribal Council are formalizing their efforts to improve the health outcomes for the First Nations population within their service areas.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will provide the framework for the two organizations to collaborate on programs and other initiatives to meet the needs of First Nations families. Today, STC and Saskatoon Health Region commit to ensuring full participation in the design and delivery of health programs and services for First Nations people.
"This MOU represents our commitment to improving the quality of life for First Nations citizens.” says Chief Felix Thomas, Saskatoon Tribal Council. “This MOU will further our commitment to the protocol agreement we have with other Tribal Councils in the intent of providing quality service and care, not only for STC members, but all First Nations people living in urban centres".
The MOU not only focuses on improving health outcomes, but also reaffirms Saskatoon Health Region’s commitment to creating a more diverse workplace in its facilities.
“We have been working hard to create opportunities to get more young First Nations people into health careers,” says Bonnie Blakley, Vice President People and Partnerships, Saskatoon Health Region. “This MOU allows us to continue that as well as expand our efforts into health care programs.”
The foundation of this MOU is to ensure that activities will improve the health status of First Nations’ people through diverse, but targeted initiatives. One of the initial provisions have seen representatives from Saskatoon Tribal Council involved on the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Steering Committee, Client and Family Centred Care Advisory Committee and Cultural Competency projects by November 1, 2012.
