The Alvin Buckwold Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP)
is part of a provincial network of home based support services for
families with children from birth to age 5 who are developmentally
delayed or at risk for delay. Children who are mentally, physically,
emotionally, hearing or visually disabled are eligible to receive
the service.
The Alvin Buckwold ECIP program applies to Saskatoon and surrounding
district. The Prairie Hills ECIP operates as a satellite program
to the Alvin Buckwold ECIP with an office at the Kinsmen Children's
Centre. The Prairie Hills ECIP serves the area south of Saskatoon
to Lake Diefenbaker.
The Alvin Buckwold ECIP program is administered by a Director who
is responsible to an Advisory Board. There is no direct cost to
individuals for these services. Funding for the program is provided
through the Department of Community Resources and Employment (formerly
the Department of Social Services).
Why Early Intervention?
All children develop at different rates. However, when a child
is significantly delayed in achieving appropriate skills we say
the child is developmentally delayed. The family home provides the
child with a supportive environment in which to learn. Research
indicates that support provided to parents and other members of
the family improves the developmental outcome.
What is the Objective of Early Intervention?
To assist parents to help their child reach his/her fall potential
by:
- Preventing and minimizing the effects of handicapping conditions
and mild delays;
- Improving the child’s ability to function in the home
and community; and
- Increasing parents’ awareness of other resources.
What Services Are Provided?
Professional staff are available to provide a variety of services.
These services are provided through:
- Regular visits to the home;
- The development and implementation of an individual program
for each child by the program staff and the family;
- Supplying resource materials;
- Assisting families to access other community services; and
- Assisting in organizing parent support groups and Centre based
activities such as parent and tot groups, toddler programs and
training workshops.
A multidisciplinary team consisting of medical personnel, psychologists,
speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, social
workers, physiotherapists, dietitians, and nurses, can be available
for consultation and assistance through the Alvin Buckwold Child
Development Program at the Kinsmen Children's Centre.
What is the Role of the Parent?
Parents have an important role in caring for their children. Their
active participation in the ECIP program is essential. Parents are
encouraged to attend organized group information sharing and training
sessions with other parents.
How Can I get ECIP Services?
Program services can be obtained by contacting the ECIP office directly
or through referral by physicians, nurses, psychologists, and other
individual agencies in the community.
