Families and caregivers who have a child with a disability need
information on their child's condition. They also need to know about
services and programs available for their child. Many parents, however,
do not know where to start. The Family Resource Room at Kinsmen
Children's Centre offers parents a place where they can find the
answers to many of their questions.
The goal of the Family Resource Room is to enhance the quality
of life for children with disabilities and their families. The Family
Resource Room strives to support families by providing current information
on conditions, as well as the services and programs available to
help those with special needs and their families.
Resource Room Services
Our main service is helping parents to get information. If information
is not available, the Resource Room Coordinator helps families link
up with those who can get them the information they need.
Our services are free of charge. The Resource Room
carries:
- Books, journals, videos, pamphlets;
- Information Packages on specific syndromes, conditions as well
as funding and disabilty tax credits available;
- Newsletters and information from parent support groups and
other community service agencies; and
- Ability Online Internet Service which provides a safer monitored
"chat room" allowing children and youth from all over
the world who are ill or who have special needs to share stories
and exchange information.
