What is ambulatory care?
Ambulatory care is a broad range of services that are most effectively delivered in an outpatient setting where hospitalization is not desired or required.

In Canada, the majority of health interaction and care is provided in an ambulatory care setting. Historically, ambulatory care services have been given low priority by health regions. Saskatoon Health Region recognizes this and has developed initiatives to address this.
In 2009, Saskatoon Health Region developed an ambulatory care steering committee and established a new Director of Ambulatory Care. This followed the work of Corpus Sanchez International Consultants, who prepared a report on ambulatory care in the Region.
The Corpus Sanchez report highlighted many positives and also many deficiencies, which provided the basis for reform in ambulatory care. These recommendations included development of a vision, governance and site model for ambulatory care in the Region, with Saskatoon City Hospital as the hub. This led to the addition of a physician dyad leader in 2010 to assist the Director of Ambulatory Care to implement recommendations of the report.
