About the Breastfeeding Committee for Saskatchewan
The Breastfeeding Committee for Saskatchewan, Inc. (BCS) is a network of health professionals and consumers working to protect, promote and support breastfeeding within Saskatchewan as the optimal method of infant feeding.
Formed in 1994, and becoming a non-profit organization in 2002, it arose out of a need for a province-wide coalition that would coordinate the efforts of many individuals and organizations groups working to protect, support and promote breastfeeding in Saskatchewan.
Vision:
To provide a provincial framework that establishes breastfeeding as the cultural norm for infant feeding within Saskatchewan.
Mission:
To protect, promote and support breastfeeding within Saskatchewan as the optimal method of infant feeding.
Goal:
From 2002 – 2007, the Breastfeeding Committee for Saskatchewan will focus on implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative in provincial health facilities (hospitals and public health).
Functions:
- Coordinate the provincial implementation of the Baby-Friendly Initiative
- To provide ongoing expert advice and recommendations on breastfeeding and implementing the Baby-Friendly Initiative, to governments and organizations for research, policy and direction.
- To facilitate and support collaborative networks to protect, promote and support breastfeeding in Saskatchewan (ie. Public Health Nutritionists Working Group, Breastfeeding Committee for Canada, local breastfeeding committees).
- To provide a forum for sharing information and addressing Baby Friendly Initiative implementation issues brought forward to the group.
