Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters
Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters Awareness and Promotion Alliance, Inc is a community-based organization of mothers and health professionals dedicated to the normalization of exclusive and extended breastfeeding in our community.
Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters is open to ALL persons who are interested in supporting breastfeeding, within Saskatoon and area. Members may or may not be breastfeeding, but agree that breastfeeding is the normal method of infant feeding, and that mothers need to be supported by family, society and the health system to be able to have a satisfying breastfeeding experience and to be able to reach their breastfeeding goals.
- Breastfeeding is a women’s right. It is her right to be able to provide her child with normal nutrition through breastfeeding, and it is her right to obtain the physical and emotional health that can come to her through a breastfeeding relationship.
- Breastfeeding is a child’s right. All children have the right to be breastfed in order to achieve and maintain normal health.
- Breastfeeding is a food security issue. All people, according to Saskatoon’s Food Charter, are entitled to a healthy and secure food supply. This begins at birth with breastfeeding.
Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters organizes education and community events throughout the year to provide a supportive mothering environment. The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge is one such event - read the report from 2008 (PDF).
Breastfeeding Matters holds an open meeting on the first Thursday of every month. Call 306-655-4630 for details on the location and time.
New members are welcomed, especially interested moms. Quiet children in arms are welcome, and childcare is provided for more active children. Please call ahead if you need to use it.
