Clinical Practice Guidelines
About the Saskatchewan Clinical Practice Guidelines
Completed in February, 2008, the CPGs for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes Foot Complications were compiled through Saskatchewan Health by a multi-disciplinary team from health regions and organizations across the province.
The guidelines are intended for use by all health care providers working with people with diabetes. The goals are to:
- introduce a common vocabulary and consistency of practice
- assist care providers in directing their efforts in prevention and management of diabetes foot complications
The Saskatchewan guidelines are congruent with the 2008 Canadian Diabetes Association’s CPGs.
The guidelines can be downloaded in whole or in sections.

Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) Guidelines
Developed by the RQHR Foot Care Working Group, November, 2008
On November 27, 2008, RQHR hosted a day-long province-wide telehealth session to introduce the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for Prevention/Management of Diabetes Foot Complications. In addition, they also reviewed RQHR specific materials and have now made these available for others outside RQHR.
Thanks to the RQHR team for their presentations, hard work and willingness to share their resources.
The PDF is available as a single unit or can be downloaded in sections. The following is a brief synopsis of the sections and ideas for use.
Guidelines for First Nations and Métis People
Within RQHR there are 17 First Nations communities and also a number of Métis communities. This document comments on the barriers to care for First Nations/Métis people from both the literature and research done within RQHR. Recommendations have been made to enhance care and services. A number of resources are listed along with the contact information.
Care Pathways by Level of Risk
This one page succinctly and clearly provides a guide for action based on the loss of protective sensation, or not, and the risk category of the feet.
It will be use for provider education and a guide in implementation of consistent and appropriate client services
Foot Care by Type of Service
This one page document covers the full spectrum of foot care and indicates which providers are able to offer the service needed.
The following pages contain RQHR specific contact information for the various providers. Other Health Regions/organizations could use this template as a guide to create their own resource.
Foot Check Supply List
This section provides a list of suppliers for monofilaments – disposable and re-usable and tuning forks.
