LiveWell Sleep Disorders Program
The Sleep Disorders Centre was established at the Royal University Hospital in the summer of 1995. The centre serves to diagnose and treat patients with sleep disorders.
Most patients are referred to the centre for investigation of excessive daytime sleepiness, such as in the condition called "Obstructive Sleep Apnea", the most common sleep disorder seen in this laboratory. To date however, some 82 distinct sleep disorder categories have been identified, most of which can now be successfully diagnosed and treated. Besides Obstructive Sleep Apnea other common disorders include Narcolepsy, Periodic Leg Movements in Sleep, and Parasomnias (strange behaviors seen during sleep or arousals from sleep).
Patients come to us after an evaluation by their family physician, who might then refer the patient to a specialist with an interest in sleep. These include selected respirologists, neurologists, or psychiatrists. If an overnight sleep study is warranted after consultation with the sleep specialist, a request is forwarded to the Sleep Disorders Centre for the patient to obtain an overnight polysomnogram (sleep study).
Normally one overnight session is sufficient. However depending on the results of the overnight study, approximately 15% of patients are required to spend the following day in the lab for an additional procedure consisting of 4 or 5 short naps over the course of the whole day. The overnight studies begin at approximately 8:00 p.m. on the test date and end on the morning of the following day. If daytime testing is required the entire study is usually completed by approximately 5:00 p.m. on the following day.
In September 2009, the Sleep Disorders Centre relocated to 6100, Saskatoon City Hospital to offer better service to our clients.
