Things To Know If You Are Coming For A Sleep Study
- Please eat a normal meal before 7 p.m. Do not consume any caffeine (coffee, tea, Coke, etc.) after noon on the day of the test.
- On the day of your test, please abstain from alcohol consumption of any type.
- We strongly suggest you refrain from napping on the day of your test. If you have a tendency to feeling sleepy when you drive, please have someone else drive and pick you up. Do not drive yourself. If you take "sleeping pills" bring them with you to the laboratory.
- Please have a shower or bath before you come for your test. Clean skin helps us obtain better signals.
- If you are male and normally shave, please shave in the evening before you come to the laboratory. Patients with beards are not expected to shave. Please wash your hair. Female patients should wash their hair and abstain from using hair spray or face cream. Wear little or no make-up.
- If this is your first sleep study and you have been using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) at home, please do not use your CPAP at home for two nights before your study. If this results in your being too sleepy to drive, have some one drive you to the laboratory.
What To Bring
- Appropriate sleepwear, something you feel comfortable in. Do not buy sleepwear for the occasion. Sweat suits are suitable. You are also encouraged to bring your own pillow if it helps you sleep.
- Some spending money for breakfast the following morning. There is usually a one to three hour wait before your study can be interpreted and your results explained to you. This will leave you with ample time for breakfast.
- Personal toiletries, (e.g., toothbrush, comb, shampoo, etc.).
- Any medication normally taken (prescription or non-prescription).
- Housecoat, reading material to keep you entertained while waiting.
If you are currently using a CPAP or BiPAP macine, please bring it and your mask.
If your overnight study shows you need a different pressure than your current setting, we will be able to adjust it for you on the following morning.
The patients register at Emergency Room prior to 20:30 on the night of their study. If arriving late, patients should go to the front doors and get directions from information to come up to the lab.
