Who and what is the Saskatoon Falls Prevention Consortium?

September 2002 the Saskatoon Falls Prevention Consortium came into being.
Broad representation included:
- Veterans Affairs Canada,
- From Saskatoon Health Region: Public Health Services, Client Patient Access Services, Home Care, Geriatric Assessment Program, Community Services (Physical and Occupational therapies), Pharmacy
- Colleges of Nursing, Kinesiology, School of Physical Therapy, City of Saskatoon Community services.
Word of the consortium spread and membership has grown to also include:
Orthopedics SCH, Saskatoon Community Clinic Occupational Therapy, Saskatchewan Central Acquired Brain Injury Team, Off Broadway Physiotherapy and Dizziness Clinic, Forever…in motion, Primary Health, Saskatchewan Health-ABI Partnership, Regina Red Cross, Parkland Ambulance (Prince Albert), Saskatoon Balance and Dizziness Centre
Physician members: Dr. Jenny Basran, Dr. Lilian Thorpe, and Dr. Johnmark Opondo
Other health regions staff has joined the consortium: Sun Country Health Region, Cypress Health Region, and Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. Five Hills Health Region and Safe Saskatchewan are in communication with the consortium to share information.
Communication is maintained with the SHR Falls Working Group which is discussing prevention of falls occurring within health region facilities. (Chrystal Grant, Chair).
Two community seniors have joined the consortium in the last year.
A common vision, mission and values statement was developed and approved by the membership in February 2003 and reaffirmed April 23, 2006.

Prevention of injuries related to falls in seniors
Mission
Work together in a collaborative partnership to plan, implement, and evaluate a coordinated and comprehensive strategy to reduce fall-related injuries in seniors.
Values
Evidence based,
Build capacity within the community,
Multi-faceted approach: education, enforcement (relating to policy/codes), and engineering/environment,
Interdisciplinary partnerships.
Goal (December 2003)
- to reduce the incidence and severity of fall injuries among Saskatoon seniors by 20% within the next decade.
Members of the consortium meet 4 – 6 times per year to actively engage in planning and implementation of projects to increase awareness of injury prevention among older adults, share resources and information and build networks with others who have a vested interest in injury prevention in Saskatchewan and Canada.
