Prenatal Education - Primary Health
Purpose Statement:
Helping families beginning their parenting journey.
Classes:
It is recommended to register early in your pregnancy for classes. Each series provides information on pregnancy, labour and delivery, coping strategies, infant feeding, and post partum adjustment. Classes include lectures, videos, and interactive participation.
There are two options for classes:
- One evening/week for three weeks (6:30 – 9:30 p.m.) Sessions are offered Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
- Weekend Workshop – Friday evening (6:30 – 9:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
There is a $40.00 fee for the series of classes. Baby’s Best Chance, a comprehensive parenting book, is provided to each participant at no additional cost.

Slide Tour of the Royal University Hospital
The tour is held at 7:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month in the Mall Lecture Theatre, Royal University Hospital. There is no cost to attend this session.
It is recommended to attend this session AFTER completing the prenatal series. However, you are welcome to attend the session that is most convenient for you.
Breastfeeding Education
Breastfeeding classes are offered Wednesday evenings (7:00 – 9:00 p.m.) following the end of each series of prenatal classes. There is no cost or registration for the classes. Husbands/partners/support persons are encouraged to attend.

- benefits of breastfeeding
- myths about breastfeeding
- making the decision to breastfeed
- anatomy and physiology of the lactation process
- the first three days
- baby’s readiness to eat
- techniques of a good latch
- preventing soreness and engorgement
