About Clinical Health Psychology
What is a Clinical Health Psychologist?
Life's stresses may present many challenges that are more than
we can handle alone. A clinical health psychologist is professionally
trained in applying psychological and behavioural strategies to
address health related concerns.
Why Would I see a Clinical Health Psychologist?
A clinical health psychologist may be helpful to adults with the
following concerns:
- Difficulty in coping with illness such as multiple sclerosis,
HIV, hepatitis, cancer, stroke, epilepsy;
- Stress arising from illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome, cardiac disease, diabetes;
- Adapting to a physical illness or injury such as a head injury
which necessitates a change in lifestyle;
- Assessment of changes in cognitive functioning such as memory,
concentration and language.
How Do I Get to See a Clinical Health Psychologist?
Appointments are made following a referral from a physician or
other health care worker. Ask your doctor if you feel these
services might be helpful.
How Can a Clinical Health Psychologist Help Me?
- A clinical health psychologist will meet with you to assess
your situation and plan a course of action.
- You will have an opportunity to talk openly and confidentially
about your concerns.
What if I have Other Problems?
If you have mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety
which are not directly related to a medical condition or concerns
with addictions, relationships, physical or sexual abuse, contact
