Places that enable people to take control over their health. Health promoting places takes a broader view of health and seeks ways to improve health status and quality of life through population–based interventions. Medical care addresses the physical components of health, but other resources contribute to building healthier places: cultural norms that support behaviour and lifestyle choices, education and skill building, safe and adequate housing, recreation and culture, public safety, jobs that pay a living wage, health promotion and prevention services and transportation.

Health Promoting Workplaces
"Transform the Work Experience" is one of the four directives of the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) 2010-2013 Strategic Plan. In order to create a workplace that optimizes capabilities, capacity, engagement and quality of work life for providers and learners, SHR is participating in Excellence Canada’s Progressive Excellence Program (PEP)® for Healthy Workplaces®.
The three key elements of a Healthy Workplace® include 1) workplace culture and a supportive environment; 2) physical environment and occupational health and safety; and 3) health and lifestyle practices. There are four levels of the PEP® and these are commitment, planning, implementation and sustainability. The SHR is currently working on Level 3, Implementation. The Health Promotion Department (HPD) is supporting this work with our Health Promoting Workplaces initiatives aimed at creating supportive environments and conditions in the SHR workplace for employees to improve their health. The HPD initiatives within the SHR Workplace include:
- Representation on the SHR Healthy Workplace Leadership Team. The Healthy Workplace Leadership Team is a region-wide advisory committee for a healthy SHR workplace. The HPD supports key activities of the region’s Healthy Workplace plan required to achieve Excellence Canada’s levels as well as creating supports for SHR employees to improve their health.
- SHR Food Charter Communications Strategy. The Food Charter is Saskatoon Health Region’s official declaration of people’s right to access healthy food. The goal of the Charter is to ensure food served within the Region is healthy and safe, good for the environment and good for the community.
- SHR in motion Champion Network. A network of Champions for physical activity in the workplace is supported by providing new information and ideas for motivating staff to be active during their work day as well as out in their community.
- Active Transportation in the SHR Workplace. Looking at how SHR employees get to/from work as well as how they commute within work.
- Eliminate exposure of second hand smoke on SHR property.
- Establish a tobacco-free culture within SHR.
