Student Practicum Opportunities in the Public Health Observatory
The Public Health Observatory has supported a variety of practicum opportunities for Master of Public Health Students and Health Information Students in the past and is interested in continuing to support student educational opportunities in the future. Arrangements for practicum opportunities are made through the educational institution:
Health Information Management (SIAST)
Masters of Public Health (U of S)
Canadian Field Epidemiology Program (Public Health Agency of Canada)
The Canadian Field Epidemiology Program provides specialized training
opportunities for health professionals in the practice of applied epidemiology. Field epidemiologists may be placed at the Public Health Agency of Canada, other federal departments or provincial and local health departments. Assignments are for two years and major functions include:
- Conducting epidemiologic investigations and studies to understand and control outbreaks
- Chronic disease clusters
- Health impacts of disasters
- Environmental health issues
- Conducting epidemiological and statistical analyses of large and complex datasets
- Designing, implementing and evaluating disease surveillance systems
- Providing public health information to the media and the public
- Providing technical advice on the identification, prevention, and control of health problems to provincial and local health departments and private physicians who request assistance
- Writing scientific papers on public health issues
- Training other health professionals
The PHO hosted a field epidemiologist for the 2007-2009 cohort. This valued member of our team was involved in disease outbreak investigations, and participated in projects involving West Nile virus, Avian influenza, and Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies.
