Your doctor has asked that we assess the functionality of your
indwelling drainage tube. This is done by gently injecting x-ray
contrast ("dye") into the catheter via a syringe and using
the x-ray camera to observe the function and position of the tube.
If the tube is not satisfactorily positioned, is broken or plugged,
or is over six months in age we will change the tube for a new tube.
This is performed by placing a soft, flexible, metal wire into the
tube and exchanging the old tube over the wire for a new tube while
using the x-ray camera to guide the procedure.
The Risks of Tube Checks and Tube Changes Include the Following:
- The injection of the x-ray dye very rarely can cause patients
to have fever and chills. If this happens you should contact your
doctor who may wish to examine you and prescribe antibiotics.
- Very rarely the tube is completely plugged or broken and we
cannot exchange it or replace it. If this happens we will contact
your doctor and formulate an appropriate plan of action.
- Very rarely when exchanging a tube it falls out and we cannot
replace it. This will also require us to contact your doctor and
formulate a plan to insert a new tube and arrange appropriate
follow up or hospital admission if this is necessary.
