What is Nuclear Medicine?
Nuclear Medicine involves the use of small amounts of radioactive
materials (often called “tracers”) to help diagnose
and treat a variety of diseases. Nuclear Medicine helps to determine
the cause of the medical problem based on the function of a tissue,
organ, or system. Nuclear Medicine tests are safe and painless.
In a Nuclear Medicine test, the radioactive material is introduced
into the body by injection, ingestion, or inhalation.
How Do Physicians Schedule a Test?
To schedule a test with the Nuclear Medicine Department, the physician
faxes the completed, signed requisition to (306) 655-1742. The original
copy is kept in the patient’s file.
The completed requisition must contain:
- Complete patient biographical data and contact information
such as current address and phone number
- Date Of Birth
- 9-digit Saskatchewan Health Number
- RUH number (if known)
- Procedure requested
- Relevant clinical history
- Current medications
- Patient’s height and weight
The Clinical History will determine what priority rating the request
receives for scheduling. Please ensure all writing is legible.
All patients are required to report to the RUH Admitting Department
(not the Outpatient Department) 30 minutes prior
to their scheduled appointment time to register. Patients
are then directed to the Nuclear Medicine Department to begin their
procedure.
