Patient Preparation
MUGA studies are contraindicated
for patients who are actively undergoing blood transfusions.
Exam Procedure
A sample of
blood will be taken from a vein in the patient's arm, and will
be labeled with a radioactive tracer. Approximately 30 minutes
later, the blood will be re-injected into the patient’s
vein. Next, the patient will lie on an imaging table and have an
ECG attached to their chest. Images of their heart will then be
taken from one or several angles. The labeled blood highlights
the chambers of the heart, and produces images of the heart's structure
and function.
