Patient Preparation
No special preparation is required.
For patients with inflammatory bowel disease, no barium should be
in the GI system. A patient’s
CBC may be necessary prior to this test to assess severe leucopenia.
Exam Procedure
This procedure
involves four visits to the Nuclear Medicine Department and will
last a total of up to 6 hours. Some patients may need to come
back for imaging on the following day as well.
A sample of blood will be taken from a vein in the patients
arm. The white blood cells will be extracted and labeled with
a radioactive tracer. Approximately 2-3 hours later, the white
blood cells will be re-injected into the patient and images will
be taken at 1 and 3 hours afterwards.
