Falls Prevention

The most common cause of injuries among seniors in Canada is a fall.

Falls are one of the most complex injury issues facing seniors. The Region is committed to a safe care environment and has made falls prevention one of its safety priorities. There is a regional falls reduction working group consisting of inter-disciplinary health care team members across the continuum that strive to research and provide current best practice resources throughout the region.

Are You in the LOOP?

The Fall Prevention Community of Practice (CoP), sponsored by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, came together in 2010 to exchange information on how to create supportive communities where adults maintain their independence through fall prevention.
The Community of Practice offers:

  • Education and training on fall prevention
  • Sharing evidence-based resources and information
  • Access to research evidence through a skilled Knowledge Broker
  • Partnership building
  • Chance to inform research
  • Updates on promising practices and policy changes

Loop, created in 2015, is the bilingual online communication platform of the CoP that brings together members from across Canada to problem-solve and discuss how to implement evidence-informed and promising fall prevention practices. In 2018, Loop Junior was created. The primary difference between Loop and Loop Junior is the population of focus and thereby the different stakeholders involved – Loop focuses on fall prevention among adults and older adults while Loop Junior seeks to tackle the issue of childhood falls.

Loop's members, the intermediaries who work with adults, older adults, and/or caregivers can use this free communication platform to:

  • Network: Find an expert, mentor or collaborator by searching members by area of expertise, location or name.
  • Find answers: Harness the knowledge of our members to find an answer to your fall prevention question quickly and efficiently.
  • Work together: Use private groups, discussion posts, or direct messages to collaborate on projects with other members. Networks, committees and project teams are all welcome to join Loop.
  • Build knowledge: Access learning opportunities and evidence through webinars, e-newsletters, the knowledge centre, and an expert knowledge broker.
