Indications
  • ​Approved indications:
    • Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP)
    • Large volume paracentesis (greater than 5 litres removed, non-malignant ascites)
    • Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS)
    • Replacement in Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), except in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (TTP)
  • Other/extenuating clinical situations: as approved by the Medical Director
  • No evidence of benefit for:
    • Malignant ascites (post-paracentesis)
    • Resuscitation
    • Severe burns
    • Hypoalbuminemia
    • Hypotension in dialysis
    • Heart surgery
    • Acute lung injury

  • Order must include the albumin concentration (5% or 25%) and volume (mL) 
​Notes
  • ​A Transfusion Medicine/Canadian Blood Services chart report is NOT required for product infusion
​Administration
  • ​Administration information can be found in the Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual
  • Ensure that the correct albumin concentration is requested, since administering 25% albumin in error (instead of 5% albumin) could result in circulatory overload and significant patient harm 
  • Contains human protein; informed patient consent required for this product
